Visas for English-Speaking Countries from India

The six main English-speaking destinations, the USA, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand, all require Indian passport holders to obtain a full visitor visa with biometrics before travel. None offers visa-free, ETA or e-visa entry to Indians. Each is decided on proof of a genuine short visit and strong ties to India.

Why these six countries are grouped together

These six English-speaking destinations belong together because, for an Indian passport holder, they share the same starting point: each requires a full visitor visa applied for in advance, with biometrics, and none offers visa-free, ETA or e-visa entry to Indians. India is excluded from the US Visa Waiver Program and ESTA, the UK's ETA route, Australia's ETA (subclass 601) and eVisitor (651), and New Zealand's NZeTA.

They are also decided on the same underlying test. Every one of the six looks for a genuine short-term visitor with strong ties to India, whether a job, a business, property or family, and a clear intention to return. This is the logic behind the US "non-immigrant intent" requirement, and the same evidentiary burden runs through the UK, Canadian, Australian, Irish and New Zealand visitor visas. The whole process, and any interview, is conducted in English. There is no single shared visa across the six; each country issues its own, so a separate application is required for each destination you plan to visit.

Visa at a glance: the six countries compared

This comparison is the quickest way to see how the six differ on visa type, application route, whether an interview is required, and typical length of stay. Fees and processing times are set by each authority and change frequently, so treat every figure as indicative and confirm it on the official portal at the time of applying.

The six destinations, country by country

USA — The B-1/B-2 Visitor visa is the most involved of the six. You complete the DS-160 online, pay the fee, give biometrics and, for most first-time applicants, attend an in-person consular interview. The interview-waiver or "dropbox" facility has tightened and now generally applies only within 12 months of a prior visa's expiry, so confirm current eligibility on the official portal. United Kingdom — The Standard Visitor visa is applied for entirely online, with biometrics at a VFS Global centre and no interview. It covers tourism, family visits and some business, and permits stays of up to six months. UK visa guide →

Canada — The Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) is the standard visitor visa; an eTA does not apply to Indian nationals. It is applied for online through IRCC with biometrics, is evidence-heavy, and can be issued as a multiple-entry visa valid up to 10 years or passport expiry. Canada visa guide →

Australia — The Visitor visa subclass 600 is the only tourist pathway for Indians, who cannot use the ETA (601) or eVisitor (651). It is applied for online via ImmiAccount, with an electronic decision, and can allow stays of up to 12 months. Australia visa guide →

Ireland — The Short Stay 'C' visa allows up to 90 days. Ireland is outside the Schengen Area and issues its own visa, so a Schengen visa does not cover it. Under the British-Irish Visa Scheme, a suitably endorsed UK or Irish short-stay visa can cover both the UK and Ireland, subject to order-of-entry rules. Ireland visa guide →

New Zealand — The Visitor Visa is applied for online via Immigration New Zealand; Indians are not eligible for the NZeTA. Biometrics are required, and the visa typically allows up to six months' stay. New Zealand visa guide →

Does a US visa help with the others?

No. A valid US visa does not waive the UK, Australian or New Zealand visitor visa for Indian passport holders; you must still apply for each separately. Aggregator blogs sometimes claim otherwise, but for an Indian passport there is no visa-free UK entry, no Australian visa-on-arrival and no New Zealand waiver on the strength of a US visa.

What a US visa can genuinely do is help you qualify for Canada's CAN+ faster-processing stream, open to lower-risk Indian applicants who hold a valid US visa or have previously held a Canadian visa, and it strengthens your overall profile as a genuine, well-travelled visitor. Beyond that, treat each of the six as its own application.

What all six visas assess

Every one of the six is decided on the same core question: are you a genuine short-term visitor who will return home? The evidence that answers it is broadly common across all six.

  • A valid passport
  • Proof of sufficient and lawful funds
  • A clear itinerary and a credible purpose for the trip
  • Evidence of ties to India, such as employment, a business, property or family, showing you will return
  • Full disclosure of any previous visa refusal

One point deserves emphasis for anyone with a refusal on record: you must disclose every prior visa refusal on future applications. Non-disclosure can trigger a multi-year ban. The final decision on every application rests solely with the relevant embassy, consulate or immigration authority, and appointments and biometrics are booked on the official portals.

Is Ireland part of the Schengen Area?

No. Ireland is a European Union member but sits outside the Schengen Area, so it issues its own national Short Stay 'C' visa. A Schengen visa does not cover Ireland, and an Irish visa does not cover the Schengen countries. This is exactly why Ireland is grouped here with the English-speaking destinations rather than with Europe. Under the British-Irish Visa Scheme, a suitably endorsed UK or Irish short-stay visa can cover both the UK and Ireland. If your plans also take you into mainland Europe, see our guide to the Schengen visa from India.

Previously refused, or a complex case?

A previous refusal is not a permanent bar. What matters is addressing the reasons behind it, whether that was weak evidence of funds, unclear purpose, thin proof of ties to India or an inconsistent interview, and presenting a stronger, more coherent file next time. Remember that every prior refusal must be disclosed on future applications.

Complex and previously-refused cases are a core part of our work. A dedicated case manager reviews the earlier decision, rebuilds the documentation and, for destinations such as the USA, prepares you for the interview with DS-160 review and mock questions. We prepare the strongest possible application; the decision itself always rests with the deciding authority.

How The Parashars helps

The Parashars is a Delhi-based visa consultancy that has prepared more than 10,000 visa applications since 2017, with a dedicated case manager for every client. Our service covers advisory and document-preparation work only, including DS-160 review and interview preparation for the USA, document checks and itinerary and cover-letter preparation for the others.

For a US interview, confidence comes from preparation. We run mock interviews and review the DS-160 line by line, so nothing catches you off guard at the window.

We do not, and cannot, guarantee an outcome or a priority appointment. The decision rests solely with the relevant embassy, consulate or immigration authority, and appointments and biometrics are booked on the official portals. We hold no affiliation, partnership or special access with VFS Global, BLS International, or any government body.

Good to know

English-speaking country visas — your questions, answered

Do Indian citizens need a visa for the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand?

Yes. For an Indian passport holder, all six require a full visitor visa applied for in advance, with biometrics. None offers visa-free, ETA or e-visa entry to Indian nationals; India is not on any of their visa-waiver lists, so a proper application is always required.

Which of these six countries is easiest to get a visa for from India?

The USA is usually the most demanding, as it needs an in-person interview and has the longest appointment waits. The UK, Australia and New Zealand are fully online with faster processing, and Canada is online but evidence-heavy. Each still depends on your individual profile and documentation.

If I already hold a US visa, can I skip the UK, Australia or New Zealand visa?

No. A US visa does not waive the UK, Australian or New Zealand visitor visa for Indian passport holders; you must still apply for each. Its practical benefit is helping you qualify for Canada’s CAN+ faster-processing stream and strengthening your overall traveller profile.

Is Ireland part of the Schengen Area?

No. Ireland is outside the Schengen Area and has its own Short Stay ‘C’ visa, so a Schengen visa does not cover it. Under the British-Irish Visa Scheme, a suitably endorsed UK or Irish short-stay visa can cover both the UK and Ireland.

Can Indians use an ETA or NZeTA instead of a full visa?

No. Indian passport holders are not eligible for Australia’s ETA (601) or eVisitor (651), nor for New Zealand’s NZeTA. Indians must apply for the Australia Visitor visa (subclass 600) and the New Zealand Visitor Visa respectively, both requiring biometrics.

I was refused a visa before. Can I still apply?

Yes. A previous refusal is not a permanent bar, but you should address the reasons behind it and provide stronger evidence. You must disclose every prior refusal on future applications; non-disclosure can lead to a multi-year ban. Complex and previously-refused cases benefit from careful, dedicated preparation.
