Romania business visa

Romania is the newest name on the Schengen map. It became a full member on 1 January 2025, after air and sea border checks were lifted on 31 March 2024, and now issues the uniform Schengen short-stay visa (Type C). A business visa is simply that Type C visa endorsed for business - meetings, negotiations, trade fairs, conferences or contract signing - and it carries you across the entire Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

Apply through Romania when it is your main destination - where you will spend the most time - or your first point of entry into the Schengen area. Here Romania breaks from the pattern: unlike most Schengen states, it does not currently route Indian applications through a VFS Global or BLS centre. You lodge directly at the Embassy of Romania in New Delhi, by appointment booked on the Romanian eVisa portal. The Embassy's jurisdiction reaches residents of India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan.

Who this visa is for

  • βœ“Indian passport holders (or residents of India, Nepal, Bangladesh or Bhutan, who fall under the New Delhi Embassy's jurisdiction) travelling for a genuine business purpose such as meetings, negotiations, trade fairs or conferences.
  • βœ“A Romanian host company that issues an invitation, or a documented business relationship between the Indian and Romanian firms.
  • βœ“Romania is your main destination, or your first point of entry into the Schengen area.
  • βœ“Passport valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from Schengen, issued within the last 10 years, with at least two blank pages.
  • βœ“Proof of sufficient funds for the stay, valid Schengen travel medical insurance, and clear ties showing you will return to India.

Visa options for Romania

Short-stay Schengen visa (Type C) - business

The standard business visa for meetings, negotiations, trade fairs, conferences or contract signing; permits up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the whole Schengen area.

Multiple-entry short-stay visa (MULT)

For frequent business travellers with a sound travel history; can be issued with validity of 1, 3 or 5 years, though each stay is still capped at 90 days in any 180.

Long-stay visa (Type D) for commercial activities

A Romanian national visa for those coming to conduct or manage commercial/business activity in Romania for more than 90 days; issued directly by Romania and separate from the Schengen short-stay visa.

Documents typically required

  • βœ“Completed Schengen short-stay visa application form, signed.
  • βœ“Passport valid at least three months beyond your planned departure from Schengen, issued within the last 10 years, with at least two blank pages, plus any old passports.
  • βœ“Two recent colour photographs to Schengen specification (35x45 mm, light background).
  • βœ“Invitation letter from the Romanian host company on its letterhead, stating the purpose and duration of the visit and who covers accommodation and costs; for business visits the invitation generally has to be approved by Romania's General Inspectorate for Immigration (IGI).
  • βœ“Covering letter from the applicant, on the Indian company's letterhead, addressed to the Visa Officer, Embassy of Romania, New Delhi, stating name, designation, passport number, purpose of travel and who bears the trip costs.
  • βœ“Proof of the business relationship (contracts, purchase orders or correspondence) and Indian company registration documents where relevant.
  • βœ“Personal and company bank statements for the last six months as proof of sufficient funds.
  • βœ“Confirmed return air tickets showing entry and exit dates, and proof of accommodation in Romania (hotel booking).
  • βœ“Travel medical insurance covering the entire Schengen area for the whole stay, with minimum EUR 30,000 cover for emergency treatment, hospitalisation and repatriation.

Your exact checklist depends on your profile β€” we confirm it during your case analysis. Every visa decision rests with the embassy or consulate.

Now that Romania is a full Schengen member (since 1 January 2025), this is a uniform Schengen visa valid across all 29 Schengen countries, not a Romania-only permit. Indian applications are taken directly at the Embassy of Romania in New Delhi, by appointment through the Romanian eVisa portal - there is currently no VFS Global or BLS submission for Romania in India. Biometrics (fingerprints and photo) are captured unless you have already given them for a Schengen visa within the last 59 months, and the consulate makes the final decision.

Frequently asked questions

Do you guarantee the visa?

No - and anyone who says otherwise isn't being straight with you. The decision sits entirely with the Embassy/Consulate of Romania. What we do is assess your case honestly and build the strongest, best-documented application we can. Across the last 2-3 years, our applications have carried a success rate of around 97%.

Is a Romania business visa valid for the rest of the Schengen area?

Yes. Having joined Schengen on 1 January 2025, Romania issues the uniform short-stay visa, so you can move across all 29 Schengen countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The one condition: apply through Romania only when it is your main destination or your first point of entry.

How long does processing take?

Usually about 15 days from your appointment. It can stretch to 45 if the consulate wants a closer look or extra documents. Apply with plenty of margin, and hold off on non-refundable bookings until the visa is in hand.

Where do I submit the application - VFS or the embassy?

At the Embassy of Romania in New Delhi, directly, on an appointment booked through the Romanian eVisa portal. Romania is the exception among Schengen states: it does not currently accept applications through a VFS Global or BLS centre in India. The New Delhi Embassy serves India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan.
