Italy dependent visa
Italy's family route is not a standalone visa you can pick up on your own initiative. It is a national long-stay (Type D) visa for family reasons, and it can only be issued after the family member already living in Italy (the sponsor) obtains a nulla osta al ricongiungimento familiare (clearance for family reunification) from the Sportello Unico per l'Immigrazione (the Single Immigration Desk) in Italy. Once you enter Italy on that visa, you must apply within eight working days for a permesso di soggiorno per motivi familiari (residence permit for family reasons). There is no shortcut for Indian applicants: the whole route is tied to the sponsor's legal status and exists to reunite you with them, so if the sponsor does not yet meet the conditions, there is simply no visa to apply for.
The mechanics run in two directions. The sponsor in Italy must hold a valid residence permit of at least one year's duration (held for work, self-employment, study, research, religious reasons, asylum, subsidiary protection or family reasons; a research permit qualifies whatever its duration), and must prove lawful income and suitable, municipally certified housing before the nulla osta is granted. Where the whole family moves together with a worker, researcher, student or EU Blue Card holder, relatives can instead travel al seguito (as accompanying family), with their nulla osta issued alongside the main applicant's. Each family member files a separate application. From India you apply at the VFS Global visa centre that serves your region, give your biometrics there, and the Italian Embassy or Consulate, not VFS, takes the decision.
Who this visa is for
- ✓The sponsor must be lawfully resident in Italy on a residence permit of no less than one year's duration, held for work, self-employment, study, research, religious reasons, asylum or subsidiary protection, or family reasons (a research permit qualifies regardless of its duration); EU Blue Card holders benefit from a more facilitated reunification.
- ✓A spouse aged 18 or over, married and not legally separated (a registered partner where the relationship is recognised).
- ✓Minor children under 18, including the spouse's children or those born out of wedlock, with the other parent's consent where required.
- ✓Adult children only where they cannot provide for their own essential needs owing to a state of health entailing total invalidity.
- ✓Dependent parents where they have no other children in their country of origin, or parents aged 65 or over whose other children cannot support them for documented serious health reasons.
- ✓The sponsor must show lawful annual income at least equal to the social allowance (assegno sociale), increased for each additional family member, and suitable accommodation certified by the Italian municipality.
Visa options for Italy
Family reunification (Ricongiungimento familiare)
The standard route. The sponsor already settled in Italy applies to the Single Immigration Desk for the nulla osta; once it is issued, the relative applies for the family (D) visa from India.
Accompanying family (Familiare al seguito)
Family members travel with, or shortly after, a main applicant relocating to Italy for work, study or research. The nulla osta for the family is issued at the same time as the main applicant's, so the family need not wait for the sponsor to settle first.
Family of an EU Blue Card or highly skilled worker
Holders of an EU Blue Card or a highly skilled worker permit get a facilitated reunification with their spouse and minor children, regardless of how long the permit has been held.
Family of a student or researcher
A student or researcher holding a qualifying Italian permit can sponsor a spouse and minor children, subject to the same income and housing conditions.
Documents typically required
- ✓Passport issued within the last 10 years, with at least two blank pages, not handwritten and with no manual observations; the spouse's name endorsed in the passport where applicable.
- ✓Completed national (D) visa application form, signed, with two recent white-background passport photographs.
- ✓Nulla Osta al ricongiungimento familiare issued by the Sportello Unico per l'Immigrazione (S.U.I.), dated within six months of the application.
- ✓Original attested copy of the sponsor's passport and of their Permesso di Soggiorno (or the renewal receipt if the permit is under renewal), attested at the Italian Comune, Tribunale or Notaio.
- ✓Apostilled marriage certificate (for a spouse), attested by the Home Department and apostilled by the Ministry of External Affairs, issued in English or the dual-language version, showing the couple's photos, ages and marital status at the time of marriage; notary-attested translations are not accepted.
- ✓Apostilled birth certificate of the applicant (and of any children), issued in English or dual-language; notary-attested translations are not accepted.
- ✓Dichiarazione Sostitutiva di Atto Notorio from the sponsor confirming the marriage subsists and that no divorce or litigation is pending (spouse cases).
- ✓Certificate of housing suitability (Idoneita Abitativa) and Stato di Famiglia issued by the Italian municipality where the sponsor resides.
- ✓For dependent parents: evidence of remittances from the resident son or daughter, the applicant's bank passbook, a sworn affidavit of economic conditions and other children, and an apostilled ration card and family tree.
- ✓One-way flight reservation and photocopies of the applicant's passport pages (front, last and any pages with endorsements).

Indian applicants apply through the VFS Global Italy visa application centres, which serve applicants by region under the Embassy of Italy in New Delhi and the Consulates General in Mumbai, Kolkata and Bengaluru. You book an appointment, submit the file and give your biometric data (a photograph and, where applicable, fingerprints) at the centre; VFS only collects and forwards the application, while the Embassy or Consulate that covers your place of residence takes the decision. Civil-status documents must be apostilled by the Ministry of External Affairs and issued in English or the dual-language version, and every certificate must match the exact spellings in your passport before you submit; discrepancies between the nulla osta and your passport will put the application on hold until they are corrected in Italy.

Can I work and study in Italy on a family visa?
Yes. The residence permit for family reasons (permesso di soggiorno per motivi familiari) lets you work and study in Italy and access the national health service (SSN), and it can later be converted into a work permit. It does not, however, give the right to work in other EU countries.
Does the sponsor really need to prove income and housing?
Yes, and this is where many cases stall. Italian law requires the sponsor to show lawful annual income at least equal to the social allowance, increased for each additional family member, plus a municipal certificate of housing suitability (idoneita abitativa). The income threshold is updated every year, so confirm the current figure with the consulate or your S.U.I. before applying.
Why does the process start in Italy and not in India?
Because the family route is sponsor-led. The relative in Italy must first obtain the nulla osta (clearance) from the Single Immigration Desk, which checks their permit, income and housing. Only once that clearance is issued can you file the visa in India. It is worth getting the Italy-side paperwork right first, since discrepancies between the nulla osta and your passport will put the visa on hold.
