Hungary tourist visa
Budapest's thermal baths, the long summer shoreline of Lake Balaton, the cellars of the northern wine country - whatever draws you to Hungary, an Indian passport takes you there on a Schengen short-stay visa (Type C). It permits up to 90 days of travel in any 180-day period, and because it is a uniform Schengen visa, the same sticker opens all 29 Schengen countries.
You apply to Hungary when it is your only or main Schengen destination. In India, applications go through VFS Global, and which mission decides yours depends on where you live: the Embassy of Hungary in New Delhi handles most of northern, eastern and central India, while the Consulate General of Hungary in Mumbai takes Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Puducherry. We read your profile, put the file together and see the submission through.
Who this visa is for
- βIndian passport holders travelling to Hungary for tourism, sightseeing or a private/family visit on a short stay of up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
- βHungary must be your sole or main Schengen destination (by length or purpose of stay); if no main destination can be determined, you apply to the Schengen state whose external border you cross first on entry.
- βYou must show sufficient means of subsistence for the stay and return, and hold valid travel medical insurance with minimum EUR 30,000 cover.
- βYou apply through the mission covering your Indian state of residence: the Embassy of Hungary in New Delhi (via VFS Global) for most of northern, eastern and central India, or the Consulate General of Hungary in Mumbai for Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa and much of southern and western India.
- βThe consul must be satisfied of your intention to leave the Schengen area before the visa expires.
Visa options for Hungary
Schengen short-stay visa (Type C)
The uniform Schengen visa for tourism or private/family visits. Authorises single, double or multiple entries for a stay of up to 90 days within any 180-day period, valid across all 29 Schengen countries.
Type C - multiple entry
A short-stay Schengen visa allowing repeated entries within its validity for frequent travellers, still subject to the 90-days-in-180 limit. Entry rights are set by the consul on the merits of the application.
National long-stay visa (Type D)
For stays over 90 days (such as study, family reunification or residence). This is a separate national visa handled directly by the Embassy of Hungary in New Delhi, not the VFS short-stay tourist channel.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a Hungary Schengen tourist visa take?
By law the consulate must decide within 15 calendar days of a complete application, and in individual cases that can stretch to 45 calendar days. The timeline and the outcome are always the consulate's to set, so apply well ahead of your travel dates - we give you a realistic estimate for your case.
Which Hungarian mission handles my application, and from where in India?
You apply to Hungary when it is your only or main Schengen destination, and the file is lodged through VFS Global. Where you live decides the mission: the Embassy of Hungary in New Delhi covers most of northern, eastern and central India, with VFS centres in New Delhi, Chandigarh, Gurgaon, Jaipur, Lucknow, Kolkata and Jalandhar, while the Consulate General of Hungary in Mumbai handles Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa and much of southern and western India.
How much travel insurance do I need for Hungary?
The Schengen minimum is EUR 30,000 of cover for emergency medical care, hospitalisation and repatriation (including in case of death), valid across the whole Schengen area for the full length of your trip. Hungary adds one condition: the policy must come from an insurer on the GI Council approved list.
Do you guarantee the visa?
No one can. The decision rests solely with the Hungarian consulate and immigration authorities. What we do is give you a frank, honest read on your profile and make your application as complete and strong as it can be. Over the last 2-3 years our applications have seen a 97% success rate.
