Germany student visa
To study in Germany, an Indian passport holder needs a full national long-stay "D" visa. There is no e-visa, and none is granted on arrival. The file starts online on the German Consular Services Portal (digital.diplo.de), which pre-screens it and then books you a VFS Global appointment for biometrics and document submission at the German mission covering where you live: New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata or Bengaluru.
The D-visa is normally issued valid for 90 days up to one year, just to get you into the country. Once you land, you register locally and apply to the Foreigners Authority (Auslaenderbehoerde) for a residence permit that runs for the length of your programme. Because the mission sends every file to the competent authority back in Germany, a decision usually takes about six to eight weeks after your appointment. Arrange the APS certificate and blocked account early; they are the two things students most often leave too late.

Your exact checklist depends on your profile โ we confirm it during your case analysis. Every visa decision rests with the embassy or consulate.
Every study application starts on the Consular Services Portal (digital.diplo.de), and you apply at the German mission for your place of residence: New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata or Bengaluru. The APS certificate can take several weeks and the blocked-account funding must be in place before your appointment, so begin roughly 3-5 months ahead of your intake.
Frequently asked questions
Does Germany offer an e-visa or visa-on-arrival for Indian students?
No. As an Indian passport holder you need a national long-stay D visa before you fly. You begin online on the German Consular Services Portal, then attend a VFS Global appointment for biometrics and document submission. There is no e-visa and nothing granted at the airport for study.
Is the APS certificate mandatory?
For most Indian applicants, yes. The German Missions in India checklist requires it, with a few exceptions: a PhD/Post-Doc, a scholarship from German or EU public funds, enrolment for a non-German degree in Germany, or a non-Indian qualification such as an IB or a foreign degree.
How much money must I show?
A blocked account (Sperrkonto) holding EUR 11,904 for the first year, which lets you draw a maximum of EUR 992 per month. Instead of that, you may submit a sponsor's formal obligation letter (Verpflichtungserklaerung) from someone living in Germany, or proof of a German/EU scholarship.
Do you guarantee the visa?
No. The decision rests solely with the German mission and the competent Foreigners Authority in Germany, and the official checklist is explicit that submitting the documents does not guarantee a visa. What we do is assess your profile honestly and make your application as strong and complete as it can be. Over the last 2-3 years, our applications have had a 97% success rate.
